MAY 08 – The USSR declares it’s boycott of the Los Angeles Summer Olympics
MAY 19 – The New York Islanders go down in defeat as The Edmonton Oilers capture their 1st Stanley Cup
JUL 23 – After having nude pictures appear in Penthouse Magazine, a popular adult magazine in the US, Vanessa Williams becomes the first Miss America to abdicate the title
AUG 11 “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” is the statement heard during a voice check for a radio broadcast by US President Ronald Reagan
SEP 20 – A car bomb set by Hezbollah explodes at the US Embassy annex in Beirut, Lebanon killing 24 people
OCT 04 – The San Diego Padres are defeated by the Detroit Tigers as they win the World Series in 5 games
NOV 02 – Velma Barfield becomes the first woman executed in the United States since 1962
NOV 28 – William Penn, founder of The State of Pennsylvania, and his wife Hannah Callowhill are made Honorary Citizens of the United States after 250 years
DEC 22 – Bernard Goetz shoots four African-American youth as they attempt to rob him starting a national debate about urban crime
